This is a painting about the yam festival of the Ashanti tribe of Ghana. Yam is an edible tuber in Ghana and most African countries. Every year the first harvest of yam around autumn after the monsoon season is celebrated by some of the tribes in Ghana, however i chose the Ashanti tribe. This festival last for 5days starting on a tuesday decided by the local chief priest. Religiously, the festival is used to thank the god and the ancestors for the new harvest and to traditionally outdoor the new yam. I have depicted a typical durbar when the new yam is introduced to the public. Every one assembles on an open ground in their best clothes, the chief of the town with his members are seated. There is drumming and dancing, which i have depicted in the left hand side of the painting. The new yam is sold on the grounds at a very affordable price for everyone in the town to be able to buy some, and this i have shown the interaction at the left hand side of the painting and in the background.
